How can policy initiatives foster the development of the renewable gas industry across the EU, factoring in the objectives of net-zero, affordability for consumers, security of supply and gas free of political risk?

CEER, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the Florence School of Regulation (FSR), FEL Portugal and the Centre on Regulation in Europe (CERRE) will discuss the transformational potential renewable gases, such as green hydrogen and biomethane, have in the medium run for our energy system as well as the infrastructure and market structures that are required. Against the background of the Hydrogen and Decarbonised Gas Package and the REPowerEU Plan, the session highlights different models and use cases at European and national level, and examines how this can contribute to security of supply and net-zero objectives.

The main question posed is which steps we can take to support the sustainable development of new renewable gas industries and markets, with the end goal of diversifying Europe’s energy supplies and enabling a fair energy transition for all Europeans.

The European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) is the biggest event dedicated to renewables and efficient energy use in Europe. This year, EUSEW will take place in a hybrid format*, online and onsite in Brussels, on 26-30 September 2022 under the theme “Going green and digital for Europe’s energy transition”. Policy sessions are organised by the European Commission and energy stakeholders and will focus on sustainable energy issues, and debate new policy developments, best practices and sustainable energy ideas.
