CEER Secretary General highlights role of energy regulators at Power Summit 2024
On 22 May at Power Summit 2024 – Lights on, CEER Secretary General, Mara Berzina, emphasised the importance of strong and independent energy regulators as crucial players in the energy transition and providers of expert advice and independent decisions. The panel discussion addressed key measures and tools integrated in the recently enacted Electricity Market Design (EMD) reform to accelerate the deployment of RES and low-carbon energy while empowering consumers to actively contribute to the pursuit of a net-zero power sector.
Key elements of the new market design include:
  • Consumer engagement, demand response and flexibility, enhanced distribution networks;
  • Well-functioning long-term markets, including evolution of long-term contracts;
  • Improved transmission infrastructure, as well ascross-border infrastructure;
  • The most efficient use of existing networks and generation.
CEER contributes to the 39th European Electricity Regulatory Forum
On 27 May, Sofie Lauwaert, Team Lead Market Monitoring at VREG, the Flemish Regulator of the Electricity and Gas Market, represented CEER at the 39th European Electricity Regulatory Forum in Florence, Italy. She introduced CEER’s ongoing deliverable on NRA approaches to monitor retail markets and consumer-relevant concepts, including hedging requirements. The recent EU legislative landscape has introduced new responsibilities for NRAs, particularly in market monitoring and suppliers' hedging strategies, following the electricity market reform. During the energy crisis, hedging strategies were crucial in ensuring resilience as suppliers and consumers faced financial constraints due to skyrocketing electricity and gas prices. CEER aims to produce an overview of supplier hedging strategies and methodologies for NRAs in their monitoring efforts. Additionally, the report may expand to other relevant new NRA tasks or retail and consumer concepts.
