17th EU-US Energy Regulators’ Roundtable Reinforces Strong Transatlantic Cooperation
On 20-21 November 2025, The Council of European Energy Regulators (CEER) met with Commissioners from the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) for the 17th EU-US Energy Regulators’ Roundtable, reaffirming the strong and longstanding transatlantic partnership between energy regulators.
Hosted in Washington, DC, this year’s edition brought together senior regulatory leaders from both sides of the Atlantic to exchange on shared challenges and future opportunities in an evolving energy landscape. The programme included attendance at a FERC Open Meeting, marking Chair Laura Swett’s first meeting in her new role, a visit to the Reliability Monitoring Center, and a series of in-depth sessions with FERC and NARUC Commissioners.
Discussions focused on some of the most pressing issues faced by regulators today, including:
- Managing rising electricity demand, driven by electrification, digitalisation, and industrial needs;
- The future role of natural gas, hydrogen and LNG in ensuring system flexibility and security;
- EU and US energy policy developments following recent electoral cycles;
- Independence of regulators as a cornerstone for effective market oversight;
- Long-term infrastructure planning, including cross-border cost allocation and the security of critical resources;
- Artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and overall energy system resilience.
Building on the long-standing cooperation set out in the CEER–NARUC cooperation framework and ongoing exchanges between the EU and US regulatory communities, both sides agreed on the importance of continued collaboration. Participants identified several areas for potential future joint work including infrastructure planning, energy storage, cost allocation methodologies, enhanced data sharing, and the application of artificial intelligence in regulatory practices and system operations.
Throughout the two-day event, regulators engaged in open dialogue, sharing national and regional perspectives while exploring opportunities for deeper cooperation in support of secure, sustainable and competitive energy systems.
The Roundtable once again demonstrated the value of trusted transatlantic cooperation in addressing global energy challenges and ensuring reliable energy systems amid accelerating technological, economic and geopolitical shifts.
